Creating a comfortable, stylish, yet organised bedroom space for your child plays an influential role in encouraging a consistent sleeping pattern that will aid their development. In this blog post we look at some important areas to consider when decorating and furnishing your child’s bedroom in order to create a space that promotes sleep and relaxation.

Soothing Colours

Avoid using over patterned wall paper or too many bright colours as this can overstimulate your child and disrupt their sleep pattern. The best colours for a conducive sleep environment are generally colours that are not too bright or too dark. Pastel blues, greens and pinks are all good options that can be chosen in accordance with your child’s personal tastes or your own.

Bed Placement

Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese theory of arranging furniture in a room a certain way in order to create a favourable flow of energy. Feng Shui dictates that the best place for a bed or crib is in “the command position”. The command position is where the bed is at the opposite end of the room from the door i.e. the child can see the door from their bed but the bed is not directly in line with the door. This subconsciously gives a child a sense of control and security as they can see who is coming in to their room

Clutter-free space

Having a clutter-free bedroom for your child will encourage good habits and promote sleep by removing any potential distractions when it comes to bed time. It can be a daunting task creating a kids’ bedroom that is free from chaos. However, clever utilisation of storage space can ensure that your child’s bedroom is tidy and organised. Multi-pocket organisers are an excellent way of reducing clutter as well as being an ideal way of storing toys and other items. These can be attached to the back of cupboard doors or at the end of the bed creating a neat look. Built-in cubbies and pull-out drawers are also a fantastic way to exploit all available space.

Darkness

It may seem like we’re stating the obvious, but is your child’s bedroom as dark as it possibly could be? Some bedrooms may be situated in an area of the house where light from street lamps can intrude into the bedroom at night time, creating shadows that can be counter-productive to your child’s sleeping environment. The best way to deal with unwanted light is to incorporate blackout curtains into your children’s bedroom design. If your child uses a nightlight then blackout curtains will also strengthen the nightlight’s desired effect and give your child a feeling of control over the light in the room.

Electronics-free zone

Many experts say that using electronic devices in the bedroom disrupts the association with sleep. Try to keep your child’s bedroom free of electronic devices before they go to sleep as the light from devices such as tablets, televisions and smartphones affect your child’s ability to sleep. Ensure that your child charges any devices in another room so they are not distracted by any noises or lights whilst they sleep. It’s also a good idea to limit the use of electronic devices in the hour or so before bedtime. A good alternative is to encourage your child to read before bedtime, as this is a relaxing activity that will allow them to wind down and prepare for sleep. Instead of having a TV in the room, why not create a reading corner for your child?
