How to create a child-friendly fitted kitchen

child-friendly

When it’s time for a kitchen redesign, there are a number of things to consider before finalising your project. Not only should you think about practical requirements, fixtures and fittings, as well as visual elements, but you also need to think about your lifestyle.

If you have children, or are planning to, it may be worth choosing a fitted kitchen that’s childproofed. If you are in this position, we’ve created a list of ways you can create a child-friendly, bespoke kitchen that suits the needs of your lifestyle:

Put up the safety gates

If your chosen kitchen layout has room to stylishly fit a safety gate into the design, this should be your first and simplest option. Some designs would work better with this than others – this wouldn’t be possible in an open-plan kitchen, for example.

In-built storage

As you’re redesigning a new kitchen, you have the chance to hide some of the most hazardous items out of the child’s reach. Bins, for example, can be built-in to your cabinets and cupboards, giving you the opportunity to remove different types of temptation from your kitchen floor.

Secure loose shelving

Free-standing furniture can look extremely chic, and you don’t have to miss out just because you have little ones running around. If you do choose any free-standing shelving, dressers or other units, make sure you secure anything to the wall that you think might be likely to tip.

Lock up

Once your kitchen is up and ready, there are a selection of child-proofing latches and doorknob covers that can be used to prevent your children from accessing cupboards you don’t want them in. Cover anything that might be a hazard, such as cupboards (especially ones that hold alcohol, plastic bags and cling film, and cleaning products), bins, the fridge, washing machines and dishwashers. There are a variety of covers available, so you can choose ones that suit the style of your kitchen and which fit subtly into the background.
