As 2016 is now fully under way, what better way to begin the year than examine what bathroom trends are set to take off this year? If you are thinking of doing up your bathroom this year, have a look at some of these trends and bathroom ideas for inspiration.
1. Bathroom Colours: White is the New Black
White is the new black when it comes to bathroom fittings. While 2015 saw many sleek and moody black fixtures, 2016 will be all about a clean, contemporary vibe. The appeal of a white bathroom is partly to do with its versatility but also due to its timeless nature. As other colours have come and gone in the past, white has been ever-present in the background. Use white fixtures and fittings to complete a clean, pared-down look, or set them against a bold-colour backsplash or tiled wall to create a striking ambience for your bathroom space.
No matter what your style, whether it’s modern, contemporary or traditional, white is a fresh, classic colour, and one of the key bathroom trends we can expect to see this year.
2. Optimising Small Spaces and Increasing Functionality
Spatial planning will be a key focus for bathroom design in 2016. This is good news for those that detest clutter and loathe bathrooms that are designed without practicality and functionality in mind. Designers can incorporate built-in storage options into bathrooms to hide everything away without compromising on the overall look.
As part of this bathroom trend, trough sinks are being chosen instead of smaller designs, due to the fact that their wide, deep rectangular shape makes hand-washing clothes practical and easy. Functionality has also been a focus for showers, with the latest trend being curbless walk-in showers. The removal of the trip hazard makes this an ideal purchase for anyone who wants a sleek, uninterrupted look – or for someone who is accident prone!
3. Custom and Oversized Tiles
2015 was the year of oversized clothing – from oversized shirts to boyfriend jeans – and we believe that 2016 will be the year of oversized tiles. We’re seeing stores now stocking a great selection of extra large tiles in a range of different colours and textures. The benefit of opting for this popular choice is the spatial illusion that these tiles create – making even the smallest of bathrooms look sizeable. What’s more, cleaning the tiles is effortless with the reduced number of grout lines.
And with demand for handmade tiles soaring, we expect to see artisan tiles ranging from hand finished ceramics and glossy neutrals to patchwork patterns and deep jewel tones increasing in popularity. Artisan tiles are considered beautiful for their imperfections and it’s recommended that they are paired with stone features.
4. Hi-tech Shower Features
Smart technology is well and truly established in our day-to-day lives – in the car, in our living rooms, in our bedrooms – and 2016 will see that extend to our bathrooms too. There are now new showers with Bluetooth and internet capabilities that allow you to play music (safely!) while you shower. As more rooms in our home become kitted out with smart technology, we expect bathrooms to be a part of this trend.
5. Underfloor Heating
Underfloor heating is often regarded as a luxury, but it’s not without its practicalities. Bathroom floors are notoriously cold, especially if you have tiles, but underfloor heating eliminates this problem. In addition to this, underfloor heating can help dry out the humidity and moisture that builds up while bathing or showering, which is particularly useful as it prevents mould and damp from forming.
6. Metallic Features
Metal has become a popular interior trend in recent years and looks set to continue in 2016. While the style of taps and towel rails in recent times has generally been polished steel, a variety of quirky metals such as bronze, brass and nickel are being increasingly used. Metallic features also have the added bonus of being a fairly cheap way of updating the look of your bathroom.
7. Industrial Chic
Edgy industrial design will slowly come into its own this year with concrete style walls and floor tiles becoming all the rage. If done tastefully, pairing this with metallic features can make for a unique look, however, be careful not to make your bathroom space look too cold and harsh. Contrasting textures such as wood and natural fibres along with cosy bathmats and towels can work to soften the look.
